Mutter – Green Peas at Dakshin Indian Bistro
What is Mutter – Green Peas?
Mutter (Green Peas) are small, round, and vibrant green legumes that are widely used in cooking across various cuisines, especially in Indian dishes. They are harvested from the pea plant and can be eaten fresh, frozen, or dried. Green peas have a naturally sweet, mild flavor and a tender texture when cooked.
Rich in nutrients, mutters are an excellent source of plant-based protein, fiber, vitamins (especially vitamin C and K), and minerals like iron and magnesium. They are commonly used in curries, soups, rice dishes (like Mutter Pulao), and snacks, and can also be added to salads or stir-fries.
Their versatility, nutritional benefits, and delightful flavor make them a favorite ingredient in many dishes, especially in vegetarian and vegan cooking.

- 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1-2 green chilies, chopped (optional)
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1/4 cup water (adjust for consistency)
- Salt to taste

Instructions
-
Prepare the Base:
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and allow them to splutter. Then, add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. -
Cook the Masala:
Add ginger-garlic paste and chopped green chilies (if using), and sauté for 1-2 minutes. Stir in the pureed tomatoes and cook until the oil starts to separate from the masala. -
Add Spices:
Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the spices blend well into the tomato mixture. -
Add Green Peas:
Add the green peas to the masala and mix well. If using frozen peas, no need to thaw them beforehand. Add water to adjust the consistency and let it simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the peas are cooked through. -
Finish with Garam Masala:
Once the peas are cooked and the flavors have melded, stir in garam masala. Let it cook for another minute or two. -
Garnish and Serve:
Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves. Serve hot with roti, naan, or steamed basmati rice.
This Mutter Masala is a simple yet flavorful dish that highlights the natural sweetness of green peas and pairs perfectly with a variety of sides.
